HDMI OVER IP NETWORK

As well as HDMI over (dedicated) Cat5 cable we can now offer transmitter / receiver systems that will send HDMI signals via an IP computer network. Amazingly they place very little load on your network bandwidth and operate as a true multicast - that is to say one transmitter can drive multiple receivers with no extra network load! They really are extremely simple to operate, just plug and play with no in-depth networking capability required. They also provide full IR feedback allowing remote control of source equipment* A flexible, scalable, low cost solution to distributing HDMI to multiple displays. Amazing!

PLEASE NOTE: Whilst the PB900 system is perfectly capable of sending and receiving 1080P signals it requires the network to be running at peak performance. In practice we find that over 100base LAN networks the PB900 system is best suited to 720P applications and the Gigabit PB5000 system is better suited to applications where full 1080P is required.

PLEASE NOTE: If using Homeplug adaptors the connection speed varies continually depending upon how much noise there is on the mains circuit. If the connection speed is too slow at any point (less than 85MBps constant for PB900) then the picture will stutter and freeze. We find the results are variable and for this reason we no longer reccomend using Homeplug for HDMI over IP.

*Note that if multiple receivers are used, the Sender will only accept IR feedback from the first Receiver to be powered up (first receiver it "handshakes" with). This is because the first powered receiver will usually be in the room you are viewing from and you would not normally want other rooms to then control what you are viewing. If you do require IR from every receiver then you can add this in the form of IR Anywhere modules (to keep it all on the IP network or a wireless solution such as the Powermid.

"Are you able to connect the transmitter / reciever to Ip over Mains Power system as i am trying to run the HD source from downstairs to a projector upstairs? IE Source into transmitter, Transmitter into Ethernet over Mains cabling adapter, Mains adapter 1 downstairs to mains adapter 2 upstairs, Adapter 2 upstairs to Reciever, reciever to projector?"

Keene replied: A tricky one to answer . This“might” work, but the speed of the Homeplug connection varies depending upon how much noise there is on the mains circuit. Very rarely is the quoted maximum MBps Homeplug speed achieved, and if the connection speed is too slow (less than 80MBps constant for PB900) then the picture will stutter and freeze. We do have some customers that continue to use them without issues but for overall reliability we've stopped recommending homeplug adaptors now for HDMI over IP.

Keene replied: You need a wired network for this system.

Keene replied: The PB900 IP address is set during production and cannot be altered. The range is from 192.168.168.(1~255).

" In the product spec it says the sender supports 1080i/p but the receiver only supports 1080p. Is this an oversight? Or if the source is outputting 1080i what does the receiver output - 720p?"

Keene replied: You can't run interlace signals over an IP network. So if your source is 1080i then the output will be 1080p. If you are using Sky say with 1080i we would recommend using 720p as the results are far superior.

Keene replied: Yes it uses packet data whether connected directly or routed via LAN

" The spec mentions input @1080i/p but output at 1080p. My device outputs at 1080i so what happens at the other end? I assume the sound is carried over the hdmi and down mixed to 2 channels or does the hdmi only carry 2 channels? "

Keene replied: If 1080i is feed into the transmitter then you will get 1080p from the receiver. Most HDMI sources only use 2 channel through the HDMI connection.

Is that a configuration you have tested at all or had any feedback on? I ask because the distributors of a competing hdmi-over-ip product have stated their version does not work over a homeplug based network? "

Keene replied: This definitely works with home plug as we do have customers already using it with this network.

Keene replied: This is failry new techonology and at presnt this is the only one we stock. We have been very impressed with the perfomance of this product. In a year or so I imagine the price will drop once this sort of technology becomes more common place.

Keene replied: You would not need anything else. There is an IR wand that would attach to the Sky box then you just point your Sky remote at the receiver to relay the IR signal.

Keene replied: It does not have an in built scaler. The input resoultion determines the output resolution.

Keene replied: Yes it does use compression (:"M-JPEG Intraframe compression scheme base on the discrete cosine transform (DCT)) but the compression should be unnoticeable on screens up to 46", Above that we'd recommend a direct cabled connection if at all possible.

"Is the transmitter an HDMI sink or do you need a single or more receivers switched on for the HDMI to output say on a PS3? Also is the network loading very small and is it prioritised QOS or similar so as large file transfers on the network do not affect quality/interrupt the signal? If the source HDMI is carrying 5.1 or 7.1 LPCM is this down mixed to 2CH for the receiver(s), how is this handled? This set-up has the potential to fix many things that I have wanted to do in my system and would allow me to feed all of my rooms as I have wired UTP network in every room from a central gigabit switch and so I am very interested in this product."

Keene replied: The Transmitter operates as a multicast so the network load is the same whether it is sending the signal to one or to 100 receivers. It will only send the signal to one of its own receivers however so you could use a PS3 as the source but not a destination. The audio output is stereo 48Khz.

Keene replied: There should be just the one transmitter on the LAN and any number of receivers. Because it works as a multicast the receivers aren't "paired" as such to a particular receiver, rather they are just looking for the signal from a transmitter. This keeps the network bandwidth low and you can use the IR feedback to control an HDMI switcher downstream of the sender, although of course each receiver will always get the same signal.

" I've got a full Gigabit multi-switch (5 individual switches)network in place at home and want to utilise that existing network to take the HDMI ouput from my Denon AVR4308 about 10m away via my network into my Samsung 50" plasma (both have network points nearby!) I previoulsy have tried your CAT5 HDMI extenders which did not work at all for this function....how will I know this will work? If it doesn't will there be a problem returning it?"

Keene replied: Yes that should be absolutely fine, the HDMI over CAT5 units require dedicated wiring whereas this is specifically designed to use existing LAN wiring. And yes of course we would take it back should there be any problem, although I can't foresee any problems with this application

Keene replied: Assuming the homeplug devices currently carry the PC network signal without problems then yes the PB900 system should work.

Keene replied: For this system both the transmitter and receiver are HDCP compliant, so if the content is HDCP protected, then all the displays will also need to be HDCP compliant in order to show the content correctly.

Keene replied: This is not standard 1080p resolution this system would pass it through provided you can send this down your current HDMI connection. As its not 1080p it would effect the aspect ration possibly producing black bars above and below picture . It will do both 50&60Hz.
