Is it possible to use another type of switch rather than the PIR. I have a similar setup for still cameras using a IN beam. Can I use that "switch" instead of the PIR output?

Keene replied: Any switch or relay contact can be used to trip the controller
You may need to provide a small pull up resistor of around 2K2.
