Operate almost any Windows programme WinAmp, DVD player, Powerpoint, TV card etc. etc by IR remote. Keene Electronics IR GIZMO allows you to operate your WinAmp, DVD player, Powerpoint programme, TV card (in fact almost any Windows application that supports keyboard shortcuts) by IR remote control. All you have to do is connect the IR Gizmo receiver to your PC's serial (com) port, load & configure the software and, with a suitable IR remote, you are ready to go.

There are two parts to the IR Gizmo package.

The software:
This is set up ready to operate many of the programmes or devices you might want to control remotely, for example WinAmp, ATI TV, Miro studio TV, Hauppauge TV, Creative DVD players DXR2 and DXR3, Hollywood magic DVD player etc. You can also configure it to control other programmes. If you would like to know more about what the IR Gizmo can do before you buy, the software is available on request.

The receiver:
This is a small IR receiver (pictured top right) powered from the PC. It sits on top of or alongside the PC and converts the signal from an IR remote control* into a PC signal.

1 John H on 26 May 2009 asked  :
"I am looking for an IR to RS232 adapter and your IR Gizmo looks good. However, I need to use it from Linux not Windows. Is there a pdf that describes what the Gizmo transmits on the RS232 port when it receives IR input? I can't see anything on the download page about it. Also, is there a maximum cable length that it can support? Thanks."

Keene replied: the IR gizmo is not particularly sensitive to cable length. And you should be able to go 50M or so depending on the cable. There is not a pdf but I should be able to dig something up for you. From memory I believe it is the decoded output of the Sony based remotecontrol. A few minutes with hyperterminal should show that quite easily. To a certain extent the IR gizmo has been superseded by our KIRA which is a more versatile unit and connects via a local network and can be used with packages like EventGhost or intelliremote to control a PC or device.
