INSTEON And X10
X10 is a communication protocol for remote control of mains electrical devices. It works by passing control signals through your existing mains wiring. There are two essential parts to an X10 installation; a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates the control signal ('switch on', 'switch off', 'brighten' or 'dim') and these signals are acted upon by receiver modules connected to the mains within the house. In essence, X10 allows you to assign a unique "address" to every electrical item you want controlled. Commands can then be sent to each particular address, allowing items to be turned on and off, (or dimmed) as required.
Insteon is a new type of Home Automation system. What's great about this system is that it is backward compatible with X10, so any X10 modules and devices you already have can be integrated and easily controlled with any smartphone app or the PC program. Insteon builds on X10's ease of installation and adds extra dual mesh technology to make it even more reliable. "Dual" means that INSTEON uses both radio frequency signals and the home's existing electrical wiring to talk to each other. Every message is confirmed as it is received, and if any errors are detected, the message is automatically resent.
Most of the Insteon and X10 products require no DIY skills at all, you just plug the devices in and start using them. A few of the products (wall switches etc) do require some basic electrical DIY skills for safe installation and operation. (As ever, if you're in doubt please consult a qualified electrician.)
